Weight: 2.00 kg

Liriope muscari, commonly known as lilyturf or blue lily turf, is a hardy, grass-like perennial that thrives in a variety of conditions. It is often used as ground cover or edging in gardens.

Characteristics

  • Appearance:
Liriope muscari features clumps of strap-like, arching, glossy, dark green leaves that typically grow 12-18 inches tall. In late summer, it produces erect flower spikes with dense, violet-purple flowers resembling grape hyacinths, followed by blackish berries that can persist into winter.
  • Growth Habit:
This plant expands slowly by short stolons and does not spread aggressively, making it suitable for controlled garden spaces.

Growing Conditions

  • Soil:
Prefers well-drained, average to fertile soil and can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils. It thrives in acidic to neutral pH.
  • Light:
Liriope muscari can grow in full sun to part shade, although it may produce elongated foliage in full shade.
  • Watering:
Regular watering is essential during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.

Maintenance

  • Pruning:
To maintain its appearance, cut back the foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
  • Fertilization:
While not heavy feeders, applying a slow-release fertilizer in early spring can promote growth.

Uses in Landscaping

  • Ground Cover:
Liriope muscari is excellent for mass plantings, providing a lush ground cover that helps prevent erosion and control weeds.
  • Edging:
It is often used as an edging plant along pathways, driveways, and flower beds due to its dense growth habit and attractive flowers.
