Asparagus densiflorus 'Mazeppa' – Mazeppa Asparagus Fern
Asparagus densiflorus 'Mazeppa' is an exceptionally tough, indigenous evergreen perennial celebrated for its lush, compact growth habit and fine, needle-like foliage. Forming a dense, dark green mat of gracefully arching, woody stems, it is much more compact and tidy than traditional asparagus ferns. During summer, it bears sprays of tiny, sweetly scented white to pale pink flowers hidden among the foliage, which mature into bright red berries that attract local birdlife.
Known for its remarkable resilience against heat, drought, and light frost, 'Mazeppa' is an outstanding multi-purpose plant. It performs effortlessly as a water-wise groundcover, a retaining wall cascading accent, or an elegant addition to patio containers and hanging baskets.
🌿 Dense, Soft Texture: Creates a rich, dark green carpet of delicate-looking yet durable foliage
💧 Water-Wise & Resilient: Thick tuberous root system stores water, offering outstanding drought tolerance
🐦 Wildlife Friendly: Sweetly scented blooms attract bees and butterflies, while the red berries provide food for birds
🪴 Stunning Cascading Habit: Softens harsh edges when tumbling out of hanging baskets, tall planters, or rockeries
🧱 Erosion Control: Strong fibrous root network helps bind soil on slopes, embankments, and terraced beds
🌱 Low Maintenance: Highly adaptable to diverse soil conditions and thrives with minimal fuss
Plant in well-drained, fertile soil. Work plenty of generous, good-quality organic compost into the planting hole to improve soil texture and moisture retention while maintaining optimal drainage. For pots and hanging baskets, use a rich, well-draining potting medium.
Feed with a balanced, organic slow-release fertiliser or liquid plant food (such as an all-purpose 3:1:5 or fish emulsion) in spring and mid-summer to promote lush, vibrant foliage growth.
☀️ Light: Full sun to semi-shade. In full sun it develops an exceptionally tight, sturdy habit; in shade it grows slightly longer and more open.
💧 Water: Water regularly until established. Once mature, it requires little water and easily survives dry spells. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
🌱 Soil: Well-drained sandy, loamy, or standard garden soil.
✂️ Maintenance: Trim back older or yellowing stems at the base occasionally to refresh the plant and encourage vigorous, fresh new shoots.
