Product Description Hydrangea macrophylla, affectionately known in South Africa as the Krismisroos or Mophead Hydrangea, is a classic, deciduous garden shrub celebrated for its spectacular, large ball-shaped flower heads and lush, vibrant green foliage. Blooming from early summer through to autumn, it fills shaded garden areas with an abundance of dramatic colour. Flower hues naturally respond to soil pH—ranging from rich blues and purples in acidic soils to warm pinks and reds in alkaline soils.

Recommended Growing Medium & Compost Plant in rich, deep, humus-rich soil that holds moisture while providing good drainage. Generously incorporate high-quality organic compost and well-rotted leaf mould into the planting hole. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch (such as pine bark or compost) around the root zone to keep soil temperatures cool and retain vital moisture.

Recommended Fertiliser Feed in early spring and mid-summer with a balanced, slow-release organic fertiliser. To intensify blue flowers, feed with an acid-plant fertiliser and apply aluminium sulphate; to promote pink flowers, use a standard balanced fertiliser and incorporate agricultural lime into the surrounding soil.

Growing Conditions

💧 Water: Water deeply and regularly. Hydrangeas have high water needs, especially during warm summer spells.
