Pak Choi is a fast-growing Asian leafy vegetable producing attractive upright rosettes of crisp green leaves and thick, juicy pale-green to white stems. It has a mild, slightly sweet flavour and is excellent harvested young or allowed to develop into full-sized heads. It is particularly popular for stir-fries, Asian dishes, soups, salads and steaming. Pak choi can be harvested in approximately 4–10 weeks, depending on whether baby leaves or mature heads are wanted.
Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis
Plant in rich, fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Incorporate plenty of quality compost or vegetable-growing compost before planting. Pak choi performs particularly well in nutrient-rich soil that does not dry out.
Use a balanced vegetable fertiliser during active growth. Regular feeding can help support vigorous leafy growth, particularly where the soil has limited nutrients.
