Product Details

Botanical Name: Ziziphus mucronata

Common Names: Buffalo Thorn, Blinkblaar-wag-‘n-bietjie, Wait-a-bit Thorn

📌 Product Description

Ziziphus mucronata, commonly known as Buffalo Thorn or Blinkblaar-wag-‘n-bietjie, is a well-known indigenous South African tree recognised for its distinctive zig-zag branching and paired thorns—one straight and one hooked. The hooked thorns easily catch onto clothing, giving rise to the name “wait-a-bit.”

The plant has glossy green leaves (“blinkblaar”) that create a dense canopy. In spring to summer, it produces small greenish-yellow flowers followed by edible brown fruits that attract birds and wildlife.

Highly adaptable and hardy, Buffalo Thorn is widely used in indigenous and wildlife gardens, providing shade, ecological value, and cultural significance.
