Murraya koenigii (Curry Leaf Plant)

Product Description

Murraya koenigii, commonly known as the Curry Leaf Plant, is a small, evergreen shrub grown primarily for its highly aromatic leaves, which are a staple ingredient in many Indian and South Asian cuisines. The plant produces clusters of delicate white flowers followed by small black berries. It is an excellent addition to kitchen gardens, herb beds, and containers, and is valued for both its culinary and ornamental qualities.

Size When Fully Grown

  • Height: Typically 1.5 m – 3 m
  • Spread: Approximately 1 m – 2 m
  • Forms a bushy shrub that can be pruned to maintain a compact shape.

Best Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Best growth and flavour development in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during establishment. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm, frost-free climates. Sensitive to frost and cold temperatures.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mid-summer.
  • Pruning: Light pruning to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Remove any dead or weak stems.

Common Pests & Problems

Murraya koenigii may be affected by:

  • Aphids
  • Scale insects
  • Mealybugs
  • Whitefly
  • Spider mites
  • Leaf miners
Regular inspection and early treatment reduce pest damage.

Toxicity (Animals & Humans)

  • Generally non-toxic.
The leaves are edible and widely used in cooking. However, ingestion of large quantities of other plant parts (berries, seeds) may cause mild stomach upset in pets.
Keep pets from chewing stems or berries.

Planting & Seasonal Guidance (South Africa)

  • Best Time to Plant: Spring or early summer for best establishment.
  • Growing Season: Active growth occurs in spring and summer.
  • Harvest Season: Leaves can be harvested year-round in warm climates; best flavour in warm months.
  • Winter Care: Protect from frost and cold; reduce watering in winter.
