Product Details
Weight: 20.00 kg

Product Name: Alocasia Macrorrhiza – Large (Elephant Ear)
Botanical Name: Alocasia macrorrhiza
Common Name: Elephant Ear / Giant Elephant’s Ear

Description:
A bold and dramatic tropical plant prized for its very large, glossy, green leaves that evoke a lush, jungle-style aesthetic. Alocasia macrorrhiza is perfect for creating striking focal points in gardens, patios, pond edges, and large containers. Its expansive foliage delivers a strong architectural presence and works well in both informal tropical landscapes and modern outdoor or indoor spaces.

Size When Fully Grown:

  • Height: Typically 1.5 m to 3 m outdoors in ideal conditions; larger specimens can reach up to 3 m+ in warm, sheltered locations.
  • Spread: Mature plants can spread 1 m to 2 m or more, depending on spacing, nutrition and moisture.
  • Leaves: Individual leaves may be very large (often over 50 cm long on mature plants), giving the plant its common name.

Best Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light to dappled shade. Avoid harsh midday sun outdoors as this can scorch leaves; some morning or late afternoon sun in moderate climates is acceptable.
  • Soil: Rich, moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil or potting mix with good organic content.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently evenly moist (not waterlogged). Allow the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity; plants will appreciate regular misting or grouping with other plants to boost moisture in the air.
  • Temperature: Performs best in warm conditions; avoid prolonged exposure below ~15 °C. Tender to cold and frost.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced, diluted fertiliser during the active growing period to support vigorous foliage growth.
  • Root or crown rot can develop if soil is kept too wet with poor drainage.
  • Leaf browning or leaf drop may occur from low humidity, cold drafts, or inconsistent watering.
Regular inspection, good airflow, and appropriate watering help mitigate these problems.

Seasonal and Planting Guidance:

  • Best Time to Plant: In South African climates, spring to early summer is ideal for establishing new plants outdoors or transplanting into larger containers. This timing allows warm weather and active root growth.
  • Growing Season: Active leaf development occurs through spring and summer, with vigorous growth in warm and humid conditions.
  • Dormancy/Slower Growth: During cooler months or when conditions are not ideal (lower light/temperatures), growth may slow and some older leaves may die back; growth resumes with warming conditions.
