Phoenix roebelenii (Pygmy Date Palm)

Product Description

Phoenix roebelenii, commonly known as the Pygmy Date Palm, is a popular, elegant palm prized for its feathery, arching fronds and compact, graceful form. It is ideal for patios, garden borders, tropical landscapes, and container planting, providing a lush, tropical feel without becoming overly large. This palm is a classic choice for both indoor and outdoor spaces where a smaller palm is desired.

Size When Fully Grown

  • Height: Typically 2 m – 4 m
  • Spread: Approximately 1.5 m – 2.5 m
  • Slow to moderate growth rate; often remains compact in containers.

Best Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Best growth in full sun with some protection from harsh afternoon sun in hotter areas.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
  • Watering: Regular watering during establishment; once established, moderately drought tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm, frost-free climates. Sensitive to severe frost.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring and mid-summer.
  • Pruning: Remove dead fronds and flower stalks to maintain tidy appearance.

Common Pests & Problems

Phoenix roebelenii may be affected by:

  • Scale insects
  • Mealybugs
  • Spider mites
  • Palm weevils (in some regions)
  • Fungal issues if overwatered or in poorly drained soil
Regular inspection and good airflow reduce pest pressure.

Toxicity (Animals & Humans)

  • Generally non-toxic.
Phoenix roebelenii is considered safe for pets, though ingestion of fruit or large amounts of foliage may cause mild stomach upset.
It is a pet-friendly palm for family gardens.

Planting & Seasonal Guidance (South Africa)

  • Best Time to Plant: Spring or early autumn for best establishment.
  • Growing Season: Active growth occurs in spring and summer.
  • Winter Care: Reduce watering in winter; protect from frost in colder areas.
