Hemerocallis (Daylily)

Product Description

Hemerocallis, commonly known as Daylilies, are hardy, clump-forming perennials celebrated for their vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that open daily and last for just one day, with new blooms appearing continuously. Daylilies are valued for their low-maintenance habit, colourful seasonal displays, and strong adaptability, making them ideal for borders, mass plantings, cottage gardens, and containers. They perform well in both formal and informal garden settings and are a favourite for creating long-lasting colour.

Size When Fully Grown

  • Height: Typically 0.5 m – 1 m
  • Spread: Approximately 0.5 m – 1 m
  • Forms dense clumps with strap-like foliage.

Best Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Best flowering in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with good organic matter.
  • Watering: Regular watering, especially during flowering. Daylilies are moderately drought tolerant once established.
  • Temperature: Tolerant of a wide range of climates; hardy and reliable.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and again after the first flush of flowers.
  • Pruning: Remove spent flower stems to encourage continuous blooming. Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour.

Planting & Seasonal Guidance (South Africa)

  • Best Time to Plant: Spring or autumn for best establishment.
  • Growing Season: Active growth occurs in spring and summer.
  • Flowering Season: Late spring to summer, with many varieties reblooming into autumn.
  • Winter Care: Reduce watering in winter; cut back foliage once it dies back and mulch to protect the crown in colder areas.
