Scented maroon-coloured flowers are a feature of this plant, but what makes it particularly attractive in the garden is the way its lovely pale green leaves show up against the dark stems. Its neat, compact growth makes it ideal for flower arranging, background planting or as a specimen. P. tenuifolium ‘Cathrine’ has pointed, bright green leaves with a creamy-yellow margin; ‘Garnetti’ has greenish-white leaves with maroon margin and red speckles; while ‘Saundersii’ has pointed, leathery, dark green leaves with a slightly wavy, creamy-yellow margin.
