Citrofortunella microcarpa 'Dwarf' – Calamondin / Calamansi Orange

Product Description The Dwarf Calamondin (Citrofortunella microcarpa, also known as Citrus mitis) is a highly ornamental, miniature citrus hybrid celebrated for its year-round appeal, sweet-scented blossoms, and heavy crops of small, vibrant orange fruits. It forms an attractive, densely branched evergreen bush with glossy, deep green foliage. One of its greatest charms is its ability to produce clusters of intensely fragrant, star-shaped white blossoms and colourful fruit simultaneously across multiple seasons.

Its naturally compact, dwarf growth habit makes it exceptionally versatile. While it performs beautifully in sheltered, sunny garden beds, it is globally renowned as one of the very best citrus varieties for growing in decorative patio containers, courtyards, and sun-drenched verandas. The tart, zesty fruit makes excellent marmalade, preserves, cocktail garnishes, and marinades.

Benefits

🍊 Year-Round Visual Appeal: Frequently carries glossy green leaves, fragrant white blossoms, and bright orange fruit all at the same time

🌸 Intensely Fragrant Blooms: Fills patios, courtyards, and garden corners with an intoxicating sweet citrus fragrance

🪴 Perfect Container Variety: Naturally dwarf habit thrives in large pots, urns, and decorative planters

🍹 Culinary Versatility: Tart, flavourful juice and aromatic peel are ideal for marmalades, beverages, dressings, and Asian cuisine

🐝 Pollinator Favourite: Rich nectar in the blossoms attracts bees, butterflies, and beneficial pollinators to the garden

🌱 Hardier Citrus: Considerably more cold-hardy and forgiving than many other citrus types once established

Recommended Growing Medium & Compost Plant in rich, well-aerated, free-draining soil. Incorporate generous amounts of organic compost and well-rotted kraal manure or composted bark into the planting hole to enhance soil structure and encourage active root growth. For potted specimens, use a high-quality potting medium blended with coarse river sand or perlite to guarantee sharp drainage, as citrus roots dislike standing water.

Recommended Fertiliser Feed regularly from early spring through autumn with a specialised citrus fertiliser (or a balanced organic fertiliser high in nitrogen and potassium, such as 3:1:5 or 8:1:5). Supplement with trace elements (iron, zinc, and magnesium) every few months to maintain rich green foliage and prevent leaf yellowing.

Growing Conditions

☀️ Light: Full sun is essential for heavy flowering and bountiful fruit production.

💧 Water: Water thoroughly and deeply, then allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out before watering again. Reduce frequency during cooler winter months.

🌱 Soil: Sandy-loam to loamy soil with excellent drainage and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).

✂️ Maintenance: Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain a neat shape, remove inward-growing or crossing branches, and clear out any dead wood.
