Clivia miniata ‘Citrina’ (Yellow Clivia)

Product Description

Clivia miniata ‘Citrina’, commonly known as the Yellow Bush Lily or Yellow Clivia, is an exceptionally prized evergreen perennial celebrated for its luminous, creamy-yellow floral displays. Highly sought after by collectors and shade landscapers alike, it features wide, arching, strap-like leaves of rich, dark forest green that form robust, architectural clumps.

From late winter into early spring, stout flowering stalks rise proudly above the dense foliage, each crowned with a magnificent, rounded umbel of 10 to 20 trumpet-shaped, buttery-yellow blossoms. Following the vibrant bloom cycle, ornamental green berries develop, slowly maturing to a soft, golden yellow. Thriving in dry-to-moderate shade under mature trees or sheltered veranda beds, this resilient indigenous classic brings an enduring sense of quiet luxury and dependable structure to shaded landscapes and patio pots.

Plant Names

  • Botanical Name: Clivia miniata var. citrina (syn. Clivia miniata 'Citrina')
  • Common Names: Yellow Clivia, Yellow Bush Lily, Geelboslelie

Product Details

  • Container Size: Standard nursery pot (also ideal for direct bed planting or decorative patio urns)
  • Plant Type: Evergreen perennial / shade-loving herbaceous bulb-like succulent root system
  • Flowers: Large umbels of 10–20 flared, trumpet-shaped, soft lemon to bright butter-yellow blooms with pale yellow or cream throats
  • Foliage: Broad, strap-like, deep emerald to dark green leathery leaves arranged in a neat, fan-like opposite habit
  • Growth Habit: Clumping, compact, stemless perennial forming broad, elegant rosettes
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches 40cm to 60cm in height with an equal clumping spread of 45cm to 60cm
  • Light Requirements: Dappled shade, light shade, or deep indirect light (protect strictly from direct sunlight to prevent foliage bleaching and leaf scorch)
  • Watering Needs: Low to moderate; naturally drought-tolerant once established due to fleshy roots; allow soil to dry out between waterings and avoid waterlogged conditions
  • Soil Preference: Rich, porous, well-draining soil with abundant organic compost or leaf mould; slightly acidic to neutral pH
  • Position: Understory tree canopy plantings, shaded border beds, south- or east-facing walls, sheltered courtyards, and deep patio containers

Benefits

🌿 Luminous Floral Display: Rare yellow trumpet blooms brighten dark garden corners and shady woodland pockets during late winter and spring

🪴 Year-Round Architectural Foliage: Broad, dark evergreen straps provide clean, sculptural form even when not in bloom

💧 Drought-Tolerant Shade Plant: Resilient, thick fleshy root system easily handles dry shade once established

🌸 Long-Lasting Garden Value: Produces attractive decorative yellow seed berries after flowering, prolonging visual appeal

✨ Low-Maintenance & Pest-Resistant: Exceptionally tough, pest-resilient, and virtually pest-free when protected from direct sun and overwatering

Care & Maintenance

  • Light: Plant in full shade or dappled light under deciduous or evergreen tree canopies. Harsh midday or afternoon sun will cause white scorch patches on the dark leaves.
  • Watering: Water moderately during active growth in spring and summer, ensuring surplus water drains away freely. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and winter to encourage a strong budding cycle.
  • Humidity & Frost: Performs best in frost-free microclimates; in frost-prone regions, plant under dense evergreen overhead protection or keep in containers on a covered veranda.
  • Feeding: Apply a slow-release organic fertiliser or a potassium-rich liquid feed in spring to boost flowering performance and foliage colour.
  • Grooming: Remove spent flower stalks near the base after blooming (unless saving berries) and trim any older, yellowed base leaves to maintain a tidy rosette.
