Pelargonium peltatum (Ivy Geranium)

Common names:
Ivy Geranium, Trailing Geranium, Ivy-leaf Geranium

Botanical name:
Pelargonium peltatum

Product Description

Pelargonium peltatum, commonly known as the Ivy Geranium, is a vigorous, trailing perennial prized for its glossy, ivy-shaped leaves and masses of vibrant flowers. Ideal for hanging baskets, window boxes, balcony planters, and containers, it creates a cascading display of colour throughout the warmer months. This hardy and water-wise plant performs exceptionally well in South Africa’s climate and is a favourite for both coastal and inland gardens.

Size When Fully Grown

  • Height: ±30–45 cm
  • Spread / Trailing length: up to 1–1.5 m
  • Growth habit is spreading and trailing rather than upright

Best Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light shade
(Best flowering in full sun; some afternoon shade in very hot inland areas)
  • Soil: Well-drained soil or potting mix
  • Watering: Moderate; drought-tolerant once established
    (Avoid waterlogged soil)
  • Climate: Thrives in warm, temperate, and coastal regions
  • Maintenance: Low maintenance; pinch back stems to encourage bushier growth and more flowers

Best Season to Plant (South Africa)

  • Planting season:
Spring to early summer (September – November) is ideal
  • Flowering season:
Spring through autumn (September – April)
  • In frost-free areas, plants may flower almost year-round

Additional Notes (Optional for Online Shop)

  • Excellent for hanging baskets and containers
  • Water-wise and heat tolerant
  • Attracts pollinators such as bees
  • Perennial in mild climates; treat as an annual in frost-prone areas
