Laurus Nobilis "Bay Leaf Tree" 4Liter

Laurus nobilis – Bay Leaf Tree

Product Description

Laurus nobilis, commonly known as the Bay Leaf Tree or Sweet Bay, is a classic, aromatic evergreen shrub or small tree native to the Mediterranean region. Treasured for centuries for both ornamental elegance and culinary excellence, it produces dense, glossy, dark-green leathery leaves that release a rich, warm herbal scent when crushed. In spring, it produces clusters of subtle, star-shaped yellow-green flowers, followed by small purple-black berries on female plants.

Bay Laurel is renowned for its exceptional versatility and formal beauty. It responds brilliantly to shaping, making it a top choice for clipped topiary standards, architectural hedges, and formal potted patio displays, while also thriving as a dependable culinary herb in home kitchen gardens.

Benefits

🍲 Culinary Staple: Yields the authentic, intensely aromatic bay leaves used fresh or dried in soups, stews, roasts, and sauces

🌿 Year-Round Evergreen Beauty: Maintains rich, glossy, luxuriant green foliage across all seasons

✂️ Exceptional Topiary Plant: Readily tolerates hard pruning and shaping into cones, balls, pyramids, or standard lollipops

🪴 Superb Container Specimen: Thrives in large pots and decorative planters flanking front doors, pathways, or verandas

🛡️ Hardy & Pest-Resistant: Aromatic essential oils in the foliage act as a natural deterrent against many common garden pests

💧 Drought & Wind Tolerant: Adapts exceptionally well to dry spells and coastal or exposed windy conditions once rooted

Recommended Growing Medium & Compost

Plant in rich, fertile, well-draining garden soil. Work generous amounts of high-quality compost and organic material into the planting site to encourage deep root establishment and moisture retention without allowing water to pool. For potted specimens, use a premium, loam-rich potting mix with added perlite or grit for free drainage.

Recommended Fertiliser

Feed in spring and mid-summer with a balanced, slow-release organic fertiliser (such as 3:1:5 or general organic pellets). Avoid excessive nitrogen feeds, which can lead to soft, leggy growth with reduced essential oil concentration.

Growing Conditions

☀️ Light: Full sun is ideal for optimal leaf density and oil production; tolerates partial shade well.

💧 Water: Water moderately and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid soggy roots.

🌱 Soil: Well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic loamy or sandy soil.

✂️ Maintenance: Prune and shape in late spring or summer to maintain formal topiary shapes or control hedge height. Harvest mature leaves throughout the year.
