Ophiopogon japonicus (Mondo Grass)

Product Description

Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as Mondo Grass, is a low-growing, evergreen groundcover prized for its fine, arching, grass-like foliage and tidy clumping habit. It is widely used for border edging, underplanting, shade gardens, rockeries, and low-maintenance lawns. Mondo Grass forms dense clumps that create a neat carpet-like effect and is ideal for adding texture and contrast in garden design.

Size When Fully Grown

  • Height: Typically 0.15 m – 0.25 m
  • Spread: Approximately 0.3 m – 0.5 m
  • Forms dense clumps that can be divided to maintain vigour.

Best Growing Conditions

  • Light: Partial shade to full shade. Tolerates morning sun but prefers protection from harsh afternoon sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with good organic matter.
  • Watering: Regular watering during establishment. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture.
  • Temperature: Prefers mild to warm climates and tolerates light frost.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support growth.

Common Pests & Problems

Mondo Grass may be affected by:

  • Slugs and snails
  • Aphids
  • Scale insects
  • Root rot in poorly drained soils
Good airflow, correct watering, and removing dead foliage reduce pest issues.

Toxicity (Animals & Humans)

  • Generally non-toxic.
Mondo Grass is considered non-toxic to pets, though large quantities may cause mild stomach upset.
It is a safe option for family gardens.

Planting & Seasonal Guidance (South Africa)

  • Best Time to Plant: Spring or autumn for best establishment.
  • Growing Season: Active growth occurs in spring and summer.
  • Flowering Season: Small, inconspicuous flowers appear in summer, often followed by dark berries.
  • Winter Care: Reduce watering in winter; remove dead foliage in early spring.
