Citrus Kumquat

Product Description

Kumquat (Fortunella spp. or Citrus japonica) is a small, evergreen citrus tree prized for its attractive glossy foliage, fragrant blossoms and edible fruit. The fruit is unique in that the skin is sweet while the flesh is tart, making it perfect for eating fresh, marmalades, preserves and garnishes. Kumquats are ideal for small gardens, courtyards, patios, and container growing, offering year-round interest with flowers in spring and fruit in winter.

Size When Fully Grown

  • Height: Typically 2 m – 4 m
  • Spread: Approximately 2 m – 3 m
  • Compact growth makes it suitable for containers and smaller spaces.

Best Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun is ideal for fruit production and strong growth.
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with good organic content. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Watering: Regular watering, especially during flowering and fruit set. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm, frost-free conditions. Protect from frost and cold snaps.
  • Feeding: Use a balanced citrus fertiliser during the growing season to support flowering and fruiting.
  • Pruning: Light pruning after fruiting to maintain shape and remove crossing branches.

Planting & Seasonal Guidance (South Africa)

  • Best Time to Plant: Spring (after the last frost) is ideal to allow the tree to establish before winter.
  • Growing Season: Active growth occurs in spring and summer.
  • Flowering Season: Flowers typically appear in spring, producing fragrant white blossoms.
  • Fruit Season: Fruit generally matures and ripens in late autumn to winter, depending on the climate and variety.
  • Winter Care: Protect young plants from frost; reduce watering during colder months.
