Citrus trees are famed for their vitamin-rich fruits, which can be picked over a long period. They grow best under subtropical conditions but will grow in cooler climates if located in a warm, protected spot. They make good ornamentals in smaller gardens, but need regular pruning to restrict their growth. Being smaller, kumquats and calamondins do particularly well in pots, but any citrus tree can be grown in a large container provided it is fed and watered regularly. Lemon and lime trees are popular for patios or terraces.
