Hydrangea Macrophylla "Krismisroos" 10Liter

Hydrangea macrophylla – Mophead Hydrangea / Krismisroos – 10L Bag

Product Description Hydrangea macrophylla, affectionately known in South Africa as the Krismisroos or Mophead Hydrangea, is a classic, deciduous garden shrub celebrated for its spectacular, large ball-shaped flower heads and lush, vibrant green foliage. Blooming from early summer through to autumn, it fills shaded garden areas with an abundance of dramatic colour. Flower hues naturally respond to soil pH—ranging from rich blues and purples in acidic soils to warm pinks and reds in alkaline soils.

Supplied in a substantial 10-litre size, this established specimen provides immediate scale and lush structure. It is an enduring favourite for dappled shade borders, cottage-style garden beds, and large decorative patio pots.

🌸 Huge, Showstopping Blooms: Large globe-like flower clusters provide spectacular, long-lasting summer colour

🎨 pH-Sensitive Colours: Flower tones can be adjusted using soil acidifiers (for blues) or lime (for pinks)

🌿 Lush Shady Structure: Brings bold green foliage and lush texture to shaded corners of the garden

🪴 Excellent for Containers: Thrives in large patio urns and shaded entryway pots

✂️ Exceptional Cut Flowers: Large blooms make long-lasting fresh flower arrangements and dry out beautifully

🌱 Established 10L Size: Strong root system delivers faster establishment and abundant blooms in its first season

Recommended Growing Medium & Compost Plant in rich, deep, humus-rich soil that holds moisture while providing good drainage. Generously incorporate high-quality organic compost and well-rotted leaf mould into the planting hole. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch (such as pine bark or compost) around the root zone to keep soil temperatures cool and retain vital moisture.

Recommended Fertiliser Feed in early spring and mid-summer with a balanced, slow-release organic fertiliser. To intensify blue flowers, feed with an acid-plant fertiliser and apply aluminium sulphate; to promote pink flowers, use a standard balanced fertiliser and incorporate agricultural lime into the surrounding soil.

Growing Conditions

☀️ Light: Dappled shade or gentle morning sun with full afternoon shade. Harsh afternoon direct sun scorches leaves and wilts blooms rapidly.

💧 Water: Water deeply and regularly. Hydrangeas have high water needs, especially during warm summer spells.

🌱 Soil: Fertile, moist, humus-rich, and well-draining soil.

✂️ Maintenance: Prune in late winter or early spring by removing weak, crossing, or dead stems at ground level. Cut back flowering stems down to the first pair of strong, plump green buds below the old flower head (avoid heavy cutting as most flower on old wood).
