Hibiscus sinensis (Chinese Hibiscus)

Product Description

Hibiscus sinensis, commonly known as Chinese Hibiscus, is a tropical evergreen shrub admired for its large, colourful, showy flowers that bloom throughout the warm season. It is a popular choice for garden borders, hedging, tropical-themed gardens, patios, and container planting, providing vibrant colour and a lush, exotic appearance. The plant is also commonly used for cut flowers and floral displays.

Size When Fully Grown

  • Height: Typically 1.5 m – 3 m
  • Spread: Approximately 1.5 m – 3 m
  • With regular pruning, it can be maintained as a smaller shrub or trained into a standard.

Best Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Best flowering in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with good organic matter.
  • Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during hot and dry periods. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm climates and is frost-sensitive. Protect from cold and frost.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season to encourage blooms.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth.

Common Pests & Problems

Hibiscus sinensis may be affected by:

  • Aphids
  • Whitefly
  • Mealybugs
  • Spider mites
  • Thrips
  • Scale insects
  • Leaf spot and fungal issues in poorly ventilated or overwatered conditions
Regular inspection and early treatment help keep the plant healthy and blooming.

Toxicity (Animals & Humans)

  • Non-toxic.
Hibiscus is generally considered safe for pets and humans, though large quantities may cause mild stomach upset.
Flowers are edible and sometimes used in teas, but it is best to avoid feeding plants to pets.

Planting & Seasonal Guidance (South Africa)

  • Best Time to Plant: Spring or early summer for best establishment.
  • Growing Season: Active growth occurs in spring and summer.
  • Flowering Season: Spring to autumn, with peak blooms in summer.
  • Winter Care: Reduce watering in winter and protect from frost in cooler regions.
