Product Name: Camellia japonica – Pink
Botanical Name: Camellia japonica
Common Name: Japanese Camellia

Product Description

Camellia japonica (Pink) is a classic evergreen shrub prized for its luxurious, glossy dark-green foliage and exquisite pink blooms produced in the cooler months when few other plants are in flower. The long-lasting, rose-like flowers bring elegance and colour to shaded gardens, woodland settings, formal borders, patios and large containers. Camellias are long-lived, low-maintenance plants that thrive in many temperate regions of South Africa.

Size When Fully Grown

  • Height: Typically 2 m – 4 m
  • Spread: Approximately 2 m – 3 m
  • Growth is slow to moderate; plants can be kept smaller with pruning and are suitable for large containers.

Best Growing Conditions

  • Light: Partial shade to filtered sunlight. Morning sun with protection from harsh afternoon sun is ideal.
  • Soil: Acidic, well-drained, organic-rich soil (pH ±5.5–6.5). Avoid lime or alkaline soils.
  • Watering: Regular watering, especially during bud formation and flowering. Soil should remain evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Mulching: Mulch with pine bark or compost to conserve moisture and maintain soil acidity.
  • Temperature: Prefers cool to mild climates. Protect from heavy frost and hot, drying winds.
  • Feeding: Use a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in spring and again after flowering.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning required; shape lightly after flowering if needed.

Common Pests & Problems

Camellias are generally hardy but may occasionally be affected by:

  • Scale insects (most common)
  • Aphids on new growth
  • Thrips (can damage buds and flowers)
  • Spider mites in hot, dry conditions
  • Root rot if grown in poorly drained soil
Good air circulation, correct watering and healthy soil greatly reduce problems.

Toxicity (Animals & Humans)

  • Non-toxic.
Camellia japonica is considered safe for pets and humans, making it suitable for family gardens.

Planting & Seasonal Guidance (South Africa)

  • Best Time to Plant: Autumn and early spring, allowing roots to establish before extreme summer heat.
  • Growing Season: Vegetative growth occurs mainly in spring and summer.
  • Flowering Season: Late winter to spring, depending on variety and local climate.
  • Winter Care: Protect flower buds from severe frost and cold winds where necessary.
